A new protocol made its debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as umpires began measuring players’ bat dimensions during matches. This new trend was first observed during Sunday’s double-header, where the officials checked the legality of bat sizes using a specialized gauge.
In the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC), MI skipper Hardik Pandya’s bat was inspected before he walked out to bat. Fortunately for him, the bat complied with the IPL’s regulations, which restrict the width to 4.25 inches (10.8 cm). The umpire thoroughly passed the gauge over the entire length of the bat to ensure it met the criteria at all points.
IPL 2025 Bat Regulations and Reason for Checks
The IPL’s playing conditions clearly specify that a bat must not exceed certain dimensions: width of 4.25 inches, depth of 2.64 inches (6.7 cm), and edges not thicker than 1.56 inches (4.0 cm). Moreover, the bat must be able to pass freely through a bat gauge. These strict guidelines are designed to maintain a level playing field, especially as run-scoring continues to soar.

With 200-plus totals becoming the norm, umpires are now taking extra steps to ensure batters aren’t gaining an unfair advantage through oversized equipment. Earlier that day, bats used by Phil Salt and Shimron Hetmyer were also checked, and in some cases, even replaced before they stepped onto the field.
Match Highlights and Key Performers
Although Pandya’s bat was cleared, he managed to score only 2 runs in the game. Nevertheless, he led MI to a crucial victory—just their second of the season. The real fireworks came from DC’s impact substitute Karun Nair, who smashed a blistering 89 off 40 balls, dismantling the MI bowling attack, including pace ace Jasprit Bumrah. However, Nair’s dismissal in the 12th over marked the turning point. MI’s own impact player, leg-spinner Karn Sharma, claimed three key wickets during the middle overs, stalling DC’s momentum.
Ultimately, DC fell short by just 12 runs, bowled out for 193, handing MI a much-needed win. This game not only introduced a new inspection rule but also underscored the fine margins that can define victory or defeat in the high-scoring IPL 2025 season.
