Veteran Indian spinner Piyush Chawla lost his father Pramod Kumar Chawla to COVID-19 on Monday. He took to Instagram to announce this unfortunate news. Piyush Chawla revealed that his father tussled with the deadly virus and its post complications, and finally breathed his last on Monday. Chawla recently played for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 before it was indefinitely suspended.

Piyush Chawla was roped in by Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2021 player auction for 2.4 crores. However, he did not feature in any of the game for the side with Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya being the specialist spinners in the side.

Piyush Chawla Loses His Father To COVID

Chawla took to Instagram to reveal the death of his father. He last played international cricket for India in 2012. He was then part of KKR’s second IPL title win in 2014. Chawla has also shifted his base from Uttar Pradesh to Gujarat.

Many Indian cricketers have lost their family members due to COVID since the second wave. Rajasthan Royals bowler Chetan Sakariya lost his father to COVID on Sunday in Bhavnagar. Kanjibhai had tested positive while Chetan, who was bought by the Royals for INR 1.2 crore, was playing in IPL 2021.

Amongst the other cricketers, MS Dhoni’s parents also contracted the virus and even Ravichandran Ashwin’s family as well. Indian women’s cricketer lost her mother and sister to COVID within two weeks.

The BCCI decided to postpone the IPL 2021 after players from several teams tested COVID positive. The board and the IPL governing council is still chalking out plans for the remainder of the season. However, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that India will not host the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Indian Express, Sourav Ganguly said that organising the tournament in the country wasn’t a mistake considering how low the virus caseload was in the country when the plans were being finalised.
