Ravichandran Ashwin bowled an exceptionally deceptivecarrom ball from around the wicket to get rid of the classy Proteas top-order batsman Hashim Amla. The fact that that delivery left a batsman of Amla’s class clueless showed how great a delivery it was.
This wicket made all the spectators stunned with surprise in the India vs South Africa semi-final match in the T20 WC 2014 in Mirpur (which was eventually won by India).
Ravi Ashwin is known for his skillful spin bowling and has taken many wickets by trapping the batsmen in his trick. But the dismissal of Hashim Amla was just the best. The delivery that he bowled to Amla was so good that it made the Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist call it the ‘T20 ball of the century’.
Gilchrist’s tweet after seeing the delivery that pitched outside the leg-stump and spun sharply to clip the top of off-stump evoked comparison to Shane Warne’s ’ball of the century’ to England batsman Mike Gatting during Ashes 1993.
However, this kind of baseless comparisons is just unfair.
Enjoy the magical delivery by Ravichandran Ashwin to Hashim Amla:-
