Virat Kohli Breaks Silence On RCB Stampede Tragedy

Virat Kohli has finally spoken publicly about the devastating stampede that marred Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title celebrations, 91 days after the incident. On June 4, what was meant to be a historic and joyous moment for RCB quickly turned into a heartbreaking tragedy at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The uncontrolled crowd surge claimed 11 lives and left many others injured. Kohli admitted that no one could have been prepared for such a loss.

He expressed deep sorrow, saying the tragedy turned what should have been the team’s proudest day into one of its darkest chapters. He added that his thoughts and prayers have been with the families of those who lost their lives and with the fans still recovering from injuries.

Questions Over Celebration Planning

Soon after the incident, RCB had released a statement, which Kohli initially reshared on his social media platforms. But this was his first direct and personal acknowledgement of the tragedy. The celebrations had come under sharp criticism for poor planning and lack of proper permissions. RCB had invited fans in massive numbers through open social media calls, without the required safety clearances.

This resulted in lakhs of supporters crowding the stadium premises, overwhelming security forces and local authorities. The chaos that followed revealed serious gaps in preparedness and event management, prompting demands for accountability from both organisers and the administration.

Launch of ‘RCB Cares’ Initiative

In response, the franchise has announced a long-term initiative titled “RCB Cares.” The program is designed to honour the victims and improve future safety standards at large sporting events. As part of this commitment, RCB has pledged financial support of ₹25 lakh to each bereaved family.

Beyond immediate relief, the initiative outlines six core objectives: establishing a safety audit framework, conducting annual training for on-ground staff in crowd control and emergency response, funding independent research on fan safety, providing permanent employment within stadium operations for local communities, and preserving the legacy of the fans who tragically lost their lives.

However, the implementation of these measures depends on approvals from the relevant government authorities. Kohli emphasized that the loss is now part of RCB’s history and promised that the franchise will move forward with greater care, respect, and responsibility toward its fans.
