Virat Kohli ended all speculation surrounding a possible return to Test cricket after powering India to victory with a superb century in the 1st ODI against South Africa. Despite his dominant performance rekindling fan discussions about a potential comeback, Kohli made his stance clear.
The 37-year-old, who officially retired from Tests earlier this year, insisted there has been no change of mind and no reconsideration is underway.
His remarks came shortly after reports suggested that his ODI form might push him toward a U-turn, but Kohli shut down the chatter with a firm response that reaffirmed his focus on limited-overs cricket for now.
Prioritising Recovery and Readiness
Kohli opened up about the physical realities behind his decision, emphasising that age and workload play an important role in shaping his cricketing commitments. He said, “I’m 37 and need time for recovery. That’s how it’s always going to be — I’m just playing one form of the game.” With over 300 international matches behind him, Kohli explained that a seasoned player understands the condition of their reflexes and body better than anyone else.
He noted that when a player is “hitting the ball well and playing good cricket,” what matters most is feeling “physically fit, mentally ready and excited.” His statement highlights that while his passion for scoring runs remains intact, managing workload is essential to sustain peak performance in the formats he continues to play.
BCCI Confirms No Talks of a Return
To further settle the debate, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also addressed the widespread speculation. He clarified that the board has not held any conversation with Kohli regarding a potential Test comeback. His confirmation put an administrative stamp on Kohli’s own words, ensuring there is no misunderstanding between the player’s decision and the public narrative.
Kohli’s Test career concluded earlier this year with an impressive tally — 123 matches, 9,230 runs, 30 centuries, and an outstanding average of 46.85 — numbers that reflect his lasting impact on India’s red-ball cricket history.
