Virender Sehwag Reveals The Impact Sachin Tendulkar Had During His Cricketing Career

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag spoke about the impact Sachin Tendulkar had on his life during his cricketing career. The 46-year-old shared that the legendary batter not only guided him in cricket but also taught him valuable lessons on living life off the field. Sehwag further revealed that it was Tendulkar who introduced him to a variety of cuisines.

He added that between 2001 and 2004-05, he closely followed Tendulkar like a shadow. Speaking on The Life Savers Show with Neha Bedi, the two-time triple-centurion recalled those memorable years.

“Sachin Tendulkar is my role model; he is like God to me because I started playing cricket after watching him play. He taught me a lot. Not just cricket, but also other aspects, such as how to behave in public, how to eat, and how to exercise.

“So from 2001 to around 2004-05, I followed him like his shadow. He was the first one who took me out to eat Chinese, Japanese, and Thai food.”

Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag formed one of India’s most trusted opening pairs in ODI cricket through much of the 2000s and into the early 2010s. Sehwag had previously revealed that Tendulkar was instrumental in making him reconsider his decision to retire from the 50-over format.

Virender Sehwag Believes IPL Can Be A Pathway To The Indian Jersey

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag observed that many young cricketers seemed more focused on playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) than representing India. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the IPL serves as a platform for players to earn a place in the national team. He stated:

“Yes, it is becoming a trend among the new generation of players. (Whether it is a healthy trend). You can look at it from this point of view that by playing in the IPL, you can create a route to playing for India. Many players like Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have come after playing in the IPL. All of them caught the eye of others after playing in the IPL. Then they got to play for India. So that path is fine”.
