Wanindu Hasaranga is on the verge of being appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka’s T20 International team, marking a potential shift in leadership for the squad. This move comes as Dimuth Karunaratne solidifies his position as the Test Captain, ensuring continuity in that format. The anticipation surrounding Hasaranga’s captaincy has intensified due to his influential role in Sri Lanka’s cricketing landscape.

Despite grappling with an injury sustained during his participation in the Lanka Premier League last August, Hasaranga’s credentials remain impeccable. His absence from key tournaments like the ODI World Cup and Asia Cup was deeply felt, yet it’s undeniable that he has left an indelible mark on the sport. His standout performance during the Men’s ODI World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe earlier this year exemplified his prowess.

Not only did he play an instrumental role in Sri Lanka clinching victory in that tournament, but he also emerged as the leading wicket-taker, further cementing his stature. As the cricketing calendar progresses, Sri Lanka is gearing up for a compelling series against Zimbabwe. This series encompasses a trio of ODI matches followed by an equal number of T20 Internationals, scheduled to commence on January 06.

Cricket enthusiasts can anticipate thrilling encounters, all of which are slated to unfold at the iconic R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

Furthermore, in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions, Hasaranga’s journey took a twist. While he bid adieu to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he found a new home with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, fetching a commendable amount of Rs 1.50 crore. This transition underscores his rising value and the faith franchises have in his capabilities.

An anonymous report says: “All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is tipped to be named the captain of the Sri Lanka T20 squad, while it has been confirmed that Dimuth Karunaratne will remain the Test Captain. The SLC Selection Committee is slated to meet again on Monday and make a decision ahead of Zimbabwe’s Tour of Sri Lanka in January 2024”
