Ace all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, which gets underway on August 18. He suffered an injury while playing for Lancashire in the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup 2022.

Sundar suffered the injury during Lancashire’s game against Worcestershire on August 10. The spinner received treatment from the medical staff on his left shoulder, following a heavy landing during fielding. However, he walked out of the field after some time.

The injury will keep Washington Sundar out of action for quite some time. The Tamil Nadu-born all-rounder has had a long history with injuries, which has kept him out of action for long.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shahbaz Ahmed, the Bengal left-arm spinning all-rounder, as Washington Sundar’s replacement. In a statement, the BCCI wrote:

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Shahbaz Ahmed as the replacement for Washington Sundar for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Washington Sundar injured his shoulder while playing a County game in England. He has been ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour.”

He has played 26 List A matches, scoring 662 runs at an average of 47.28 and picking 24 wickets at an economy rate of 4.43.

Shahbaz has also been a regular member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made some handy contributions with both bat and ball in the last edition and earned praise from all quarters.

India, under the leadership of KL Rahul, will begin their campaign against Zimbabwe starts on August 18 at the Harare Sports Club.

India squad: KL Rahul (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Shahbaz Ahmed.
