Wasim Akram Slams Haris Rauf: Calls Him “Run Machine As A Bowler” Against India

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram openly criticised the team’s poor performance in the Asia Cup 2025 final against India, particularly targeting fast bowler Haris Rauf. Akram described Rauf as a “run machine as a bowler” after his expensive spell that helped India secure victory.

In the crucial final, Rauf conceded 50 runs in just 3.5 overs, and his final delivery allowed Rinku Singh to score the winning runs. India clinched their ninth Asia Cup title by defeating Pakistan for the third time in this edition, leaving the Pakistani bowlers under heavy scrutiny. Haris Rauf, already in the spotlight for his on-field behaviour and controversial gestures, became the main subject of criticism following the match.

Lack of Red-Ball Cricket Exposure

Speaking to the official broadcasters after the game, Akram expressed serious concerns over Rauf’s inability to handle pressure situations. He stated, “He’s unfortunately a run machine as a bowler, and especially against India. I’m not criticizing him. The whole country’s criticizing him, and he doesn’t play red-ball cricket. He’s not going to improve.”

“lf he’s not going to play, you don’t want a player in your team who refuses to play red-ball cricket. At least play four or five first-class games.”  Wasim Akram highlighted how avoiding red-ball cricket had hindered Rauf’s growth as a bowler, especially when it comes to maintaining discipline and control during high-stakes matches. According to him, continuous exposure to first-class cricket is essential for developing the right temperament, something Rauf lacks due to his limited-format focus.

India’s Strong Finish in the Final

Akram further emphasised that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) must rethink its approach toward bowlers who refuse to participate in red-ball cricket. He stressed, “The control is not there because he doesn’t play red-ball cricket. PCB has to sit down and think, if you’re not playing red-ball cricket, thank you very much.” His comments made it clear that without building a solid foundation in longer formats, bowlers cannot deliver consistent performances against top sides like India.

Meanwhile, for India, the night belonged to young Tilak Varma, who displayed remarkable composure under pressure. His unbeaten 69 runs guided India to a comfortable five-wicket win over Pakistan, ensuring the team’s record-extending ninth Asia Cup title. Varma’s innings stood in contrast to Pakistan’s crumbling bowling attack, further magnifying Rauf’s struggles and Akram’s critical assessment.
