Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram has expressed his hope for an exciting and competitive match when India and Pakistan meet in the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai on September 14. This high-voltage clash will be the first face-off between the two arch-rivals since the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
Following the attack, relations between the two nations, especially in cricket, have deteriorated to an unprecedented level. In such a tense environment, Akram, who has been one of the finest ambassadors of the sport, appealed for restraint from both players and fans. He emphasized the importance of maintaining respect during the game.
“I am sure these matches will be entertaining, just like all other India-Pakistan matches. But I hope both the players and the fans will remain disciplined and not cross the line. If Indians are patriotic and want their team to win, the same goes for Pakistani fans. India have been in better form recently and will start as favourites, but the team that handles pressure best on the day will win,” Wasim Akram told Telecom Asia Sport.
His words underline the emotional intensity attached to these encounters while reminding everyone of the spirit of cricket.
India’s Group Stage Matches
Team India is set to kick off its Asia Cup campaign against hosts UAE on September 10 in Dubai. This opening fixture will set the tone for their tournament journey before the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue. Given the historic rivalry and the build-up around the match, it is expected to be one of the most-watched sporting events globally.
Following this marquee battle, India will conclude their group stage games with a contest against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. The group stage will be crucial for establishing momentum, and India’s consistent form gives them an edge as they step into these fixtures.
The Super 4 and Final Stage
Once the group stage concludes, the Asia Cup will advance to the Super 4 stage, scheduled from September 20 to 26. The format ensures that the top two teams from each group qualify for this round, creating more high-stakes clashes. If India manages to secure the top spot in Group A, all of their Super 4 fixtures will be played in Dubai, which could prove advantageous in terms of familiarity with conditions and crowd support.
The tournament’s grand finale is slated for September 28 in Dubai, where the best two teams will contest for the title. With India in top form and Pakistan looking to assert themselves, the Asia Cup promises to deliver thrilling cricket, provided both nations and their fans uphold the values of sportsmanship.
