Wasim Jaffer was all over social media after he was accused of religious bias for selection during his tenure as the coach of the Vidarbha team. The former India cricketer immediately stepped down as the coach of Vidarbha and defended himself on Twitter. Jaffer had a dispute with the state association as they attacked him of favouring the Muslim players in the squad.

Specifically, Cricket Association of Uttarakhand secretary Mahim Verma had accused Jaffer of forcing religion-based selections in the team. Now several players of the Vidarbha team have come forward in support of Wasim Jaffer.

Vidarbha Players Support Wasim Jaffer Over Religious Bias Allegations

Faiz Fazal who has led Vidarbha to two titles in Ranji as well as Irani trophy has tagged Jaffer as a big brother. While speaking to Lokmat Times, he admitted that he was shocked to hear about such allegations on Wasim Jaffer. Fazal asserted that Jaffer is a true gentleman and he never found anything wrong in his conduct of behaviour with any Vidarbha player.

“It’s very shocking. I have played four seasons with him. He is just like a big brother to every Vidarbha player. He is true gentleman. I have never found anything wrong in his conduct of behaviour with each player”, Fazal said.

Apart from Faiz Fazal wicket-keeper of Vidarbha Akshay Wadkar stated that Jaffer was never biased and always gave priority to the deserving players. He added that Jaffer as coach treated all players equally and such allegations are shocking for the entire team.

“Jaffer has always given first priority to the deserving players and the performances. I don’t think he will select the players on religion basis. In fact he equally treated each player when he was playing with us. Such allegations are shocking for us”, Wadkar added.

Meanwhile, Jaffer after the allegations took to Twitter and expressed his disappointment over the entire matter. Further, On allegations of bringing Maulvis (Muslim religious scholars) to the team’s training, Jaffer confirmed that he never called him during the team camp in Dehradun.

“First of all they said the Maulavis came there in a bio-bubble and we offered Namaz. Let me tell you one thing, the Maulavi, Maulana, who came on two or three Fridays during the camp in Dehradun, I had not called him”, Jaffer said.
