Team India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant pulled off an excellent diving catch to send back South Africa opener Aiden Markram on Day 1 (Friday, November 14) of the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Jasprit Bumrah, leading the Indian pace attack, delivered the crucial breakthrough by dismissing the experienced batter.

Markram managed 31 off 48 deliveries before falling. Bumrah began the 13th over with a short-of-length delivery outside off. Markram attempted a defensive shot but was beaten by the unexpected bounce. The ball grazed the top of his bat, and Pant reacted sharply to complete a clean diving catch behind the stumps.

Interestingly, Jasprit Bumrah removed both South African openers after the visitors chose to bat first. Ryan Rickelton was the first to fall, bowled for 23 off 22 by a brilliant delivery from around the wicket in the 11th over. Soon after, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav dismissed South Africa captain Temba Bavuma for 3 off 11, with Dhruv Jurel taking a sharp catch at short leg off the final ball of the 15th over.

At the current stage, South Africa were 99/3 after 24 overs, with Wiaan Mulder on 18 off 32 and Tony de Zorzi batting on 13 off 31.

Rishabh Pant Back In India’s Test XI After Four-Month Injury Layoff

Rishabh Pant made his comeback to India’s Test side in the ongoing opening match. The left-hander had been out of the squad for nearly four months after picking up a foot injury in July. He suffered the blow while batting during India’s fourth Test of the overseas series against England.

The 28-year-old was struck on the foot while trying a reverse sweep off pacer Chris Woakes. Pant resumed playing last month, leading India A in two unofficial Tests versus South Africa A. He displayed strong batting form, scoring two fifties and ending with 196 runs in four innings at an average of 49.
