Team India, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, will be without star pacer Jasprit Bumrah not just for the first ODI against Australia, but for the entire series. The selectors have opted to rest the strike bowler to effectively manage his workload, keeping in mind the packed cricket schedule over the coming months.
While Bumrah featured in only three of the five Tests during the England tour, he played every match in the Asia Cup. Just four days after the final, India began their home Test series against the West Indies, where the 31-year-old participated in both games, contributing to a 2-0 series win.
The second Test in Delhi was particularly demanding, with Jasprit Bumrah bowling 31.5 overs across both innings. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision to rest him, emphasizing that continuous play could increase the risk of injury. Speaking on October 4, as quoted by News 18, he said:
“He is crucial for the team, but we also need to consider the team’s interests. Bumrah is always available when required. We will manage the workload of all seamers, including Mohammed Siraj, to minimise the risk of injury.”
However, the Ahmedabad-born pacer will be available for the following five-match T20I series against Australia, as India continue their preparations to successfully defend their title next year. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India have been in exceptional form in T20Is recently, and the visitors will aim to maintain that winning momentum.
Bumrah Delivers Standout Performances In 2024-25 Australia Test Series
The star pacer produced one of the finest bowling displays in a Test series during India’s tour of Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Across five Tests, he claimed an outstanding 32 wickets at an average of just 13.06, including three five-wicket hauls.
However, a back injury flared up during the final Test in Sydney, preventing him from bowling in the fourth innings. Australia went on to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 series win. Ahead of the first ODI in Perth, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and chose to bowl first.
