Virat Kohli continued his remarkable consistency in ICC ODI tournaments, registering his fourth consecutive half-century against Australia. His crucial knock came during India’s chase of 265 in the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. Kohli’s ability to deliver under pressure has been a defining trait of his career, and this innings reinforced his reputation as a dependable batter in high-stakes matches.

Here’s how everyone reacted:

Kohli’s Dominance in ODIs

Kohli’s run of strong performances against Australia dates back to 2019, when he played a commanding innings of 82. He followed that up with an 85-run effort to steer India to victory in a tricky chase during the 2023 ODI World Cup opener in Chennai. Later, in the tournament’s final against Australia, he scored 54, though his cautious approach alongside KL Rahul faced criticism.

Kohli’s latest fifty marks his 74th in ODIs, adding to his illustrious record. Just days earlier, he had smashed an unbeaten century against Pakistan, once again guiding India to a successful chase.

Kohli holds numerous ODI records, including being the only cricketer to score 50 ODI centuries. During his 51st century on February 23, 2023, he also became the fastest of only three batters to surpass 14,000 ODI runs. His ability to anchor chases and finish games has solidified his place as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time.

Second Only to Tendulkar in Run Chases

During his latest innings, Kohli became just the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to surpass 8,000 ODI runs while chasing. Tendulkar, the leading run-scorer in ODIs, amassed 8,720 runs at an average of 42.33, including 17 centuries and 52 fifties in chases. Kohli, however, crossed the 8,000-run mark at an astonishing average of over 64, emphasizing his efficiency as a match-winner.

He celebrated the milestone with his 40th half-century in the second innings of an ODI, further proving his dominance in crucial run chases. Kohli’s remarkable consistency and hunger for big scores continue to set him apart, and with every innings, he cements his legacy as one of the greatest chasers in cricket history.
