Punjab left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh made the new ball do wonders, dismantling Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s stumps in the very first over of the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final on Saturday, January 11. The opener managed only five runs off as many balls in the knockout game held in Vadodara.
Arshdeep opened the bowling after Punjab captain Abhishek Sharma opted to field first. Gaikwad was beaten midway through the over by a brilliant delivery as he played for the inswinger. The next ball saw him narrowly escape, almost chopping onto his stumps, but an inside edge sent it to the boundary.
On the final ball of the over, the left-arm pacer outfoxed the batter with a delivery that held its line. Expecting another inswinger, Gaikwad played inside the line, allowing the ball to miss the bat and crash into the top of off stump, handing Punjab an early breakthrough.

Arshdeep Singh struck again in his second over, dismissing Siddhesh Veer for a five-ball duck and reducing Maharashtra to 8-2 within three overs. The pacer completed his first spell with impressive figures of 5-1-21-2. Ankit Bawne and Arshin Kulkarni have since steadied Maharashtra’s innings following Arshdeep’s early new-ball dominance.
Arshdeep Singh has taken Ruturaj Gaikwad’s wicket three times in IPL history
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, a top-order batter, has faced left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh multiple times in the IPL, engaging in several intense battles. Arshdeep, who often takes the new ball for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has consistently found success against Gaikwad in the past with his sharp swing and accuracy.
The pacer has dismissed Gaikwad three times, including twice in the 2021 season, showcasing his dominance. In their recent IPL clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 1, 2024, Arshdeep clean-bowled Gaikwad with a perfectly executed yorker.
