[WATCH] “Aur Konse Do Match? Do Saal”: Ishan Kishan Reacts To Old Rohit Sharma–Shubman Gill Video

Ishan Kishan, who recently struck his maiden T20I century against New Zealand in Trivandrum, responded playfully to a throwback video featuring former India captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

The 27-year-old was heard remarking that he did not get an opportunity to play for nearly two years despite scoring a double century in ODIs. He made the comment in a video released by 2 Sloggers on YouTube.

“Aur konse do match? Do saal (Which two games, it’s two years.”

For context, Kishan registered the fastest double century in ODI history against Bangladesh in December 2022, scoring 210 off just 113 deliveries. Despite his effort, Shubman Gill opened in the January 2023 ODI series vs Sri Lanka, while Kishan returned in the middle order against New Zealand.

In the same match, Gill went on to score a double century against New Zealand, amassing 208 runs from 149 balls. During the celebrations, Rohit Sharma playfully teased Kishan while congratulating Gill in an old video shared by the BCCI, as quoted by Hindustan Times:

“Ishan, yaar aapne 200 banake 3 match nahi khela. (Ishan, you didn’t play for three matches despite scoring a 200).”

Ishan Kishan further replied:

“Bhaiyya captain toh aap ho (Brother, you are the captain).”

Rohit Sharma’s Call: Gill Over Kishan In IND vs SL Series

Rohit Sharma opted for Shubman Gill over Ishan Kishan on the back of Gill’s strong record ahead of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in January 2023. Explaining the selection call, he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo:

“Both openers have done really well, but looking at how both have gone through, it’s fair we give Gill a chance to have a fair run, because he has got a lot of runs in the last few games. So has Ishan. I am not taking anything away from him. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double-hundred, and I know what it takes to get a double-hundred; it’s a great achievement.”

“It’s unfortunate we won’t be able to play Ishan, but considering how things have panned out over the last eight-nine months and how ODIs have gone for us, it’s fair to give Gill that run. He has done extremely well in that position. It’s unfortunate for Ishan, but that doesn’t rule him out. We will try to keep everyone in the mix and see how it pans out as we play more games,” he added.
