Veteran Australian bowler Nathan Lyon, like many viewers, was confused by KL Rahul‘s demotion to No. 3, despite his strong performance at the top in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Rahul had to vacate his opening spot for the Boxing Day Test with Rohit Sharma returning to his usual position.

Rahul, one of India’s standout performers on the tour, had been key to India’s victories in Perth and the third Test at The Gabba. However, with Rohit struggling in the middle order, India made significant batting changes ahead of the fourth Test, including Shubman Gill’s exclusion.

Rahul came in early on Day 2 after Rohit’s dismissal for just three runs. As the new batter took his position and marked his guard, Nathan Lyon, passing by, asked him why he was batting at No. 3 despite having a strong series as an opener.

“What did you do wrong to bat one down?,” Lyon’s remark was caught on the stump mic.

KL Rahul first batted at No. 3 in his debut Test during the 2014 Boxing Day Test against Australia. Since then, he has batted in that position only twice, with the latest being in the 2018 Test against England at Edgbaston.

KL Rahul was solid for the majority of his time at the crease during India’s first innings on Day 2 of the fourth Test. However, he was undone by a brilliant delivery from Pat Cummins, which seamed away after pitching.

The batter played inside the line, and the ball passed the outside edge to hit the stumps. Rahul scored 24 runs off 42 balls as India reached the Tea Break at 51-2 after 15 overs.
