England skipper Ben Stokes showed visible signs of frustration as Indian all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar stretched out play on Day 5 of the fourth Test in Manchester on Sunday, July 27. With both batters closing in on their centuries, Stokes refrained from bringing back his main bowlers.
In a light but pointed gesture, Stokes even asked whether Jadeja and Sundar wanted to complete their hundreds against part-timers Harry Brook and Ben Duckett. This came after the Indian team decided to let the pair bat on despite only 15 overs remaining, backing them to reach their personal milestones.
India eventually batted for five more overs before both teams agreed to a draw, leaving 10 overs unused. Jadeja finished unbeaten on 107, while Sundar remained not out on 101, with the duo putting on a resolute 203-run stand for the fifth wicket.
The England team stated to Jadeja:
“If you wanted a 100, you should have batted like it earlier.”
Stokes remarked to Jadeja:
“Jaddu, you want to get a Test 100 against Harry Brook & Ben Duckett?”
Jadeja further replied:
“What do you want me to do? Just walk off?
Opener Zak Crawley joined the conversation and said:
“Jaddu, just shake your hands.”
Jadeja replied sharply:
“I can’t do anything.”
Crawley restated:
“You can, you shake your hands, and it is done.”

Stokes later acknowledged that he was looking to preserve his main bowlers for the upcoming fifth and final Test at The Oval, which begins on July 31. Speaking during the post-match show (as quoted by Cricbuzz), the 34-year-old said:
“On India delaying the draw) Yeah, I think all the hard work was done by India. They both (Washi and Jadeja) played incredibly well, and it got to that point where there was obviously only one result, and there was absolutely no chance I was going to risk any of my big fast bowlers through injuries with one more game to go.”
“I had no issue with it” – Ex-England skipper surprised by Stokes’s reaction to Jadeja and Sundar
Former England skipper Nasser Hussain admitted he was taken aback by Ben Stokes‘ reaction as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar extended play on the final day. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“I had no issue with it, the Indian batters earned their hundreds. England looked tired and just wanted off the field. Stokes didn’t need to bowl Brook; it looked a bit silly. We overreact to these things.”
“India fully deserved the draw. Jadeja and Sundar were outstanding. It’s only England’s second draw under Bazball — and this time, it wasn’t rain but India’s resilience that stopped them,” he added.
