Dewald Brevis pulled off a stunning catch to send Ruturaj Gaikwad back cheaply in the first ODI between India and South Africa at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. The wicket reduced the Men in Blue to 183 for 3, with Gaikwad dismissed for 8 off 14 balls.
The breakthrough came in the 27th over of India’s innings. Ottneil Baartman bowled a fuller delivery, and Gaikwad drove it towards cover but couldn’t keep it down. Brevis launched himself into the air, diving to grab the catch at knee height in a spectacular piece of fielding.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was making his return to 50-over cricket after 2023 but couldn’t make an impact. The 28-year-old earned a recall to the ODI squad following impressive performances for India A against South Africa A, where he scored 117, 68*, and 25 in the one-day series.
Kohli And Rohit Shine In ODI Opener As Brevis’ Brilliant Catch Keeps South Africa In The Hunt
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma thrilled fans with a brilliant batting display in the ODI series opener against South Africa, putting together a 136-run partnership for the second wicket. Rohit scored 57 off 51 balls, including three sixes and five boundaries, before being dismissed lbw by Marco Jansen.
Later, Dewald Brevis pulled off a sharp catch to give the visitors a boost and keep them in the contest. At the latest update, India were 192 for 3 after 28 overs, with Kohli unbeaten on 86 off 80 balls and Washington Sundar on 7 off 7. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught behind by Quinton de Kock off Nandre Burger for 16 runs from 18 balls.
India will aim to regain momentum in the ODI format after their 1-2 series loss in Australia last month. They had won the previous two ODI series against South Africa by identical 2-1 margins, both home and away, while the Proteas’ last 50-over series victory on Indian soil came in 2025/16, 3-2.
