Virat Kohli made his return to domestic cricket, playing for Delhi against Railways in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy at Arun Jaitley Stadium. On the opening day of the match, Thursday, January 30, a fan ran onto the field in an attempt to meet the cricket icon.

The fan approached Kohli, who was fielding in the slips, and touched his feet. Security quickly intervened, surrounding the fan and escorting him off the field. As the fan was being removed, Kohli instructed the security not to harm him. The incident was captured in a video shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter):

The excitement surrounding Kohli’s return went beyond the actions of his fans. As reported by Sports Tak, the crowd’s enthusiasm led to a stampede outside the stadium, with spectators pushing and shoving to catch a glimpse of the batting legend. The chaos resulted in three people being injured, one of whom needed a leg bandage.

A security guard also sustained injuries during the incident. The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) security, along with the police, offered medical help to the injured fans and worked to manage the crowd. Additionally, a police bike was damaged in the commotion.

Virat Kohli’s return to the Delhi side for the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 is a significant boost. The former Indian captain is expected to make an impact with the bat and strengthen their lineup, despite his current form in the longer format.
