India’s young middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been one of the focal points of attention in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, not just for his batting but also for the close mentoring he has received from head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir reportedly had an “intense chat” with Varma after his dismissal for 25 runs during a match against Pakistan, urging him to score faster, and has also directed Varma and Suryakumar Yadav to play anchor roles if wickets fall quickly.

Varma, who returned to competitive cricket following injury, has so far accumulated 25 runs in consecutive matches, including a crucial innings against Pakistan where he was dismissed for 25 off 24 balls.

Tilak Varma is important for steady innings and partnerships, and Gautam Gambhir is helping him practice tough match situations.

India’s campaign in the tournament has been impressive. They defeated Pakistan by 61 runs, a dominant victory fueled by opener Ishan Kishan’s 77 off 43 balls and a disciplined bowling performance that restricted Pakistan to 152/8 in Colombo.

Earlier, India posted a 93-run win over Namibia, marking one of their biggest margins in T20 World Cup history, with Suryakumar Yadav contributing a solid 64* off 39 balls and bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh keeping the opposition in check.

These victories ensured India finished at the top of Group A, securing a spot in the Super 8 stagewith confidence. Looking ahead, India’s final Group A match is scheduled against the Netherlands on 18 February 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

With Gambhir’s mentorship continuing behind the scenes, the team aims to maintain its balance of aggressive batting and anchor innings in crucial phases.
