Axar Patel pulled off a stunning catch to give India an early breakthrough against New Zealand in their 2025 Champions Trophy clash in Dubai on Sunday, March 2. The all-rounder dived forward at deep third man to dismiss Rachin Ravindra, leaving the Kiwis at 17/1.
The wicket fell on the final ball of the fourth over of New Zealand’s chase. Hardik Pandya bowled a short delivery outside off, and Rachin attempted a ramp shot but mistimed it due to a lack of balance. Axar reacted quickly, diving forward to take a brilliant catch.

Axar Patel is among India’s top fielders. He recently earned the best fielder’s medal for his brilliant direct hit that ran out Imam-ul-Haq at the non-striker’s end during the match against Pakistan. The award was presented to him by Shikhar Dhawan, a member of India’s 2013 Champions Trophy-winning squad.

Hardik Pandya provided India with an early breakthrough after his impressive performance with the bat against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy clash. The right-hander played a crucial knock, scoring a run-a-ball 45 to help India post 249/9 in 50 overs.
Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel also contributed with vital innings, scoring 79 (98) and 42 (61), respectively, to rescue India from 30/3. The duo stitched together a 98-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Meanwhile, Matt Henry was the standout bowler for New Zealand, claiming a five-wicket haul.
Both India and New Zealand have already secured semifinal berths. The winner of this match will finish at the top of the Group A points table. Meanwhile, South Africa and Australia have advanced from Group B, with the semifinals set to take place on March 4 and 5.
