England captain Jos Buttler struggled to make an impact in the run chase during the third ODI against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 12. Pacer Harshit Rana dismissed the right-hander for just six runs off nine balls as England edged closer to a series whitewash.
Chasing 357, England got off to a strong start but lost momentum in the middle overs due to India’s spinners. Buttler walked in after Joe Root’s dismissal in the 21st over and was immediately tested by spin, even surviving a close stumping chance against Kuldeep Yadav in the following over.
However, Harshit Rana was introduced into the attack shortly after, and Buttler fell on his very first delivery. Attempting an aggressive drive to a delivery outside off-stump, he ended up chopping the ball onto his stumps. You can watch the video here:

Buttler’s disappointing tour concluded with another low score. Although he managed two fifties in the eight white-ball matches, his performances in the ODI series while batting in the middle order were unconvincing.
Harshit Rana struck again, removing Harry Brook after Jos Buttler in an eventful spell
Playing his third consecutive match, the right-arm pacer struggled with the new ball as Phil Salt and Ben Duckett attacked him during the powerplay. He was taken out of the attack after conceding 22 runs in his first two overs.
However, Rana made an immediate impact in his second spell, dismissing Jos Buttler with his first delivery. He struck again in his next over, bowling Harry Brook on the final ball of the 27th over in an unfortunate dismissal, capping off Brook’s disappointing subcontinent campaign.
At the time of writing, England are struggling at 168-6 after 28 overs, with Liam Livingstone and Gus Atkinson at the crease and the target still a long way off. A looming clean sweep signals a disastrous start to Brendon McCullum’s tenure as head coach, with England heading into the 2025 Champions Trophy in poor form.
