Team India’s Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach, Adrian Le Roux, has recently implemented the Bronco Test to evaluate players’ aerobic fitness levels. Originally developed for rugby, the test challenges athletes to run a 240-meter shuttle in a specific sequence—0m to 60m, back to 0m, then 40m out and back, followed by 20m out and back—repeated five times consecutively, totaling 1,200 meters without rest.
Players are expected to complete the entire sequence in under six minutes. Le Roux emphasized that the test serves not only as a method to gauge current fitness but also as a training tool to enhance endurance and overall performance.

Practicality and Adaptability of the Test
One of the key advantages highlighted by Le Roux is the Bronco Test’s practicality. Its design allows it to be conducted virtually anywhere, whether on home grounds or during international tours, making it an ideal benchmark for assessing the squad consistently across locations.
He pointed out that such easily deployable fitness assessments are essential for modern cricket, where the game’s intensity has increased significantly over the years. The Bronco Test, therefore, fits seamlessly into the team’s training routines, allowing players to maintain high aerobic fitness standards regardless of travel schedules or match commitments.
Focus on Conditioning and Player Longevity
Reflecting on his second tenure with the Indian cricket team, Le Roux spoke about the evolving demands of cricket over the last two decades. His primary focus remains on improving players’ conditioning to ensure they can sustain high performance while minimizing injury risks. During India’s recent England tour, the team’s physical preparation was evident as they showcased resilience to level the series 2-2 under Shubman Gill’s captaincy.
Le Roux expressed satisfaction with how the players have adapted to rigorous fitness regimes, highlighting that maintaining peak physical condition is not just about current performance but also about prolonging players’ careers and ensuring consistency in demanding schedules.
