The Hobart Hurricanes faced off against the Sydney Sixers in the BBL 2024-25 Qualifier at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The Hurricanes, table-toppers with seven wins in 10 games, entered the playoffs despite a negative net run rate. Their opponents, the Sixers, ranked second with 14 points after six wins and two no-results.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques opted to bowl first, citing the advantage of chasing in T20 cricket. The Hurricanes’ openers, Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell, gave a strong start, adding 47 runs in just 25 balls. However, Jafer Chohan ended Owen’s fiery innings of 36 runs off 15 balls, a knock laced with three boundaries and three sixes, giving the Sixers their first breakthrough.

Jack Edwards’ Stunning Catch Dismisses Matthew Wade

Sydney Sixers struck again in the sixth over when Mitchell Perry dismissed Matthew Wade, thanks to an incredible catch by Jack Edwards. Wade attempted a powerful cut shot off a short delivery, but the ball soared towards backward point. Edwards, in a spectacular display of athleticism, dived to his right and grabbed the ball one-handed mid-air.

Despite hitting the ground, he maintained a firm grip, dismissing Wade for just 4 runs off 7 balls. The jaw-dropping effort turned the momentum in favor of the Sixers as they claimed their second crucial wicket. Edwards’ catch was a highlight of the match, showcasing his sharp reflexes and determination.

Sixers Captain Moises Henriques Explains Bowling First Strategy

Speaking at the toss, Moises Henriques explained his decision to bowl first. He highlighted that the pitch was expected to remain consistent throughout the match, making chasing a favourable option. “In T20 cricket, opting to bowl gives you an edge as you know what you’re chasing,” said Henriques.

He also emphasized the importance of avoiding early collapses when batting first on uncertain wickets. The Sixers’ strategy paid off as their bowlers, led by Chohan and Perry, capitalized on key moments to restrict the Hurricanes. With disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, the Sixers gained an early upper hand in this high-stakes Qualifier.
