In the 16th match of the ongoing Sheffield Shield at Adelaide Oval, Victoria faced off against South Australia. A noteworthy moment unfolded when Jake Fraser-McGurk, initially declared out by the umpire, was later recalled by Victoria skipper Will Sutherland.

Fraser-McGurk’s Disbelief and the Umpiring Turnaround

Assuming the strike in the 30th over, Fraser-McGurk, on 10 runs, swung at a delivery, getting beaten comprehensively. The ball deflected off the wicketkeeper’s gloves into the hands of the first slip. Initially dismissed by the umpire, Fraser-McGurk’s fate took a turn when Sutherland overturned the decision.

This call proved pivotal as the 21-year-old went on to score a century, contributing 101 off 106 deliveries and stabilizing South Australia’s innings.
Expressing his reaction to the incident, Fraser-McGurk conveyed his initial disbelief regarding the umpire’s decision. He acknowledged missing the ball by a considerable margin, citing the spin it underwent and the involvement of Sam Harper’s glove before Peter Handscomb caught it.

Despite some discontent from the Victoria team, who felt they had encountered several unfortunate decisions, Fraser-McGurk emphasized the correctness of the final umpiring call.
In his words, “I missed it by probably three feet; it spun a fair bit, and I think it came off Sam Harper’s glove before Peter Handscomb caught it. Sometimes they (the opposition teams) are just like, ‘yay’… and it could have been not a serious appeal, but then the umpire’s starting to nod his head, and I was a bit in disbelief.”

“So I started walking off, then seconds later he (umpire Michael Graham-Smith) changed his decision, and the Vic boys weren’t too happy with that because they thought they had made a few unlucky decisions. But that’s the game, and in the end, it was the right umpiring call, and that’s what you want.”
