South Africa dominated the morning session on Day 1 of the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s, executing their plans flawlessly and taking their chances in the field. After choosing to bowl under overcast skies, they reduced Australia to 67 for 4 by lunch in the 27th over.
One of the standout moments came from wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who pulled off a spectacular catch to remove the dangerous Travis Head. In the final over before lunch, Marco Jansen bowled a seemingly harmless delivery drifting down the leg side.
Head, trying to glance it, managed a faint edge. The ball flew quickly, but Verreynne reacted sharply, diving full stretch to his right to complete a stunning one-handed catch. It was a brilliant effort that handed South Africa a key breakthrough.
Head had looked set to play another fighting knock, having already struck two boundaries after walking in with Australia struggling at 46 for 3. Known for his aggressive rescue acts, Head couldn’t repeat the feat this time, undone by Verreynne’s brilliance behind the stumps.

The left-handed batter was removed for 11 runs from 13 balls, with just one boundary to his name. His dismissal left Australia struggling at 67 for 4 in 23.2 overs.
Rabada And Jansen Strike Twice Each To Put South Africa In Command In WTC 2025 Final
South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bowl first in overcast conditions. Kagiso Rabada started strong, delivering three successive maiden overs. In his fourth over — the seventh of Australia’s innings — he struck twice, removing Usman Khawaja for a 20-ball duck and Cameron Green for 4 off 3 balls.
Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith looked to stabilise the innings by surviving Rabada’s fiery spell without further loss. Just as the pair appeared to settle, their 30-run partnership for the third wicket was broken by Marco Jansen, who dismissed Labuschagne for 17 off 56 balls.
Travis Head came in at No. 5 with positive intent but couldn’t stay long as Jansen sent him back shortly after.
