Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Marizanne Kapp bowled a brilliant delivery to dismiss in-form Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Hayley Matthews. The wicket fell during the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) final at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday, March 15.

After choosing to bowl first, the table-toppers dominated the powerplay as Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey kept the MI openers under pressure with tight lines and swing. The inaugural champions struggled to build momentum against the moving new ball.

Matthews found it difficult to get going, needing four balls to get off the mark. Her struggles continued into the next over as Pandey also tested her with sharp deliveries. After a shaky start, the right-handed batter eventually fell to a beauty from Kapp.

The South African pacer delivered her signature outswinger, but the ball unexpectedly nipped back in after pitching. Matthews attempted to play it towards the off side but misjudged the late movement. The ball sneaked through the gap between bat and pad, rattling the stumps.

Hayley Matthews was the Player of the Match in her previous WPL final against DC in 2023, thanks to her bowling performance. However, in the 2025 final, the all-rounder had a forgettable outing, managing to score just three runs in the crucial title clash.

DC kept up the pressure with the new ball following Matthews’ dismissal. Struggling for form, opener Yastika Bhatia found it tough against the swinging delivery. Though she managed to break free with the first boundary of the innings, her stay was short-lived as Jemimah Rodrigues took a sharp catch off Marizanne Kapp’s next over.

At the time of writing, MI are reeling at 20/2 at the end of the powerplay. Kapp is set to bowl her fourth consecutive over to complete her spell.
