In the IPL 2024 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium, CSK’s main fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana showcased his skill by dismissing Romario Shepherd. This marked Pathirana’s fourth wicket of the innings.

The dismissal occurred in the 18th over when the required run rate was over 16. Pathirana delivered a full-paced delivery that swung in sharply, hitting the leg stump and sending Shepherd back to the pavilion for just one run.

Before that, the Super Kings set a strong target of 206 runs after Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya chose to field first. Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad both scored half-centuries and built a partnership of 90 runs.

However, MS Dhoni’s explosive batting in the final over, where he scored 20 runs from just four deliveries, including three consecutive sixes, proved to be crucial.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan fast bowler made an impact immediately, taking the wicket of Ishan Kishan for 23 with his first delivery, and then removing the threatening Suryakumar Yadav for a two-ball duck.

While Rohit Sharma was aggressive from one end, the Mumbai Indians struggled to build momentum during the middle overs. The MI captain, Rohit Sharma, also faltered, scoring only two runs off six balls.

It boiled down to a challenging task of 34 runs required from the last over, prompting Gaikwad to entrust the ball to Pathirana. Despite conceding two boundaries, Pathirana delivered an impressive over.

He concluded with figures of 4 overs, 27 runs, and 4 wickets, earning him the well-deserved Player of the Match award. Rohit achieved his second IPL century, ending with an undefeated 105 runs from 63 balls, yet the five-time champions fell short by 20 runs.

It marked the defending champions’ fourth victory of the season and the Mumbai Indians’ fourth defeat, with only two wins to their credit.
