[WATCH]- Mohammed Shami Is Honoured With The Arjuna Award By The President Of India

Experienced Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami had an outstanding 2023 World Cup, and the Indian government has acknowledged his exceptional overall performance. On Tuesday (January 9) at the National Sports Awards, Shami was honoured with the Arjuna Award by the esteemed President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu.

Despite the Men in Blue finishing as the World Cup runners-up, Shami emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 scalps. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the Indian team reaching the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023.

The BCCI shared a video where Mohammed Shami is depicted receiving the award from the President of India.

Mohammed Shami aims to play in the Test matches against England

Mohammed Shami got injured in the ankle during the 2023 World Cup, leading to his absence from the recently finished two-match Test series against South Africa. He provided a fitness update to The Times of India, expressing optimism about returning during the upcoming Test series against England in India.

He added: “My rehabilitation is well on track and the medical experts at NCA are happy with my progress. There is slight stiffness in my ankle but that’s fine. I have started my training sessions and I believe I will be able to make a comeback in the England series.”

Shami commended India for an impressive turnaround in the series with their victory in the Cape Town Test. He said:

“Everyone contributed and our bowling effort was brilliant. It was a brilliant comeback by India to level the series. Unfortunately, I missed it because of injury but I want to get back to competitive cricket as soon as possible. Hopefully, you can see me back in action against England.”

If Shami requires additional recovery time, India will rely on players such as Mohammed Siraj and Mukesh Kumar to fill the void in the Tests against England, similar to their contributions in Cape Town.
