The Indian Cricket Team registered a comfortable 67 runs win over Sri Lanka in the first One-day international played at Basapara Stadium, Guhwati on 10 January 2023. Mohammed Shami made headlines with his dismissal.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a flying start putting pressure on Lankan bowlers right from the word go. Both Indian openers put on 143 runs in quick time to lay a strong foundation for a massive total.

Virat Kohli looked in sensational touch putting enough pressure along with Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul keeping the momentum going for Team India. Kohli completed his 45th ODI century and made his first century in 2023. Thanks to his superb knock along with Gill, Rohit Sharma, cameos by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, India posted a massive total of 373 for 7 in 50 overs.

Mohammed Siraj provided a great start to Team India getting wickets of Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis. Charith Asalanaka and Nissanka steadied the ship putting on 41 runs for the 3rd wicket. Umran Malik proved worth breaking his own record of fastest delivery in ODI cricket. He delivered at the speed of 156 KMPH.

Here is how Mohammed Shami dismissed the batter

India reduced Sri Lanka to 206 for 8 with Dasun Shanaka at the crease. Shanaka looked in sensational touch reaching his half-century off 50 balls. Soon after reaching his fifty, the Sri Lankan captain led from the front not giving many strikes to Kasun Rajitha. Dasun Shanaka was on 98 when Mohammed Shami ran out of him, but Indian captain Rohit Sharma decided to withdraw the appeal. This incident took place in the 50th over.

Shanaka completed his maiden ODI century off 87 balls. He and Kasun Rajitha added unbeaten 100 runs for the 9th wicket. Sri Lanka ended the innings on 306 for 8. Umran Malik was the pick of bowlers for India with 3 wickets, Siraj 2, Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Yuzvendra Chahal 1 wicket each.

” We cannot get him out like that, it was something that we did not think of,” said the Indian skipper. For his 113, Virat Kohli was named the player of the match award. India takes a 1-0 lead in the series with 2nd match to be played on 12th January at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
