[WATCH] Nitish Rana Penalised After Heated Exchange With Umpires In CSK vs DC Clash

Nitish Rana has been fined 25 percent of his match fee and given one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during Delhi Capitals’ match against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. The penalty was imposed after he was found guilty of using inappropriate language during a heated exchange with the fourth umpire in the 19th over.

Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment awarded by the match referee.

“Nitish Rana, batter, Delhi Capitals has been fined 25% of his match fee and has also accumulated 1 demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL‘s Code of Conduct for Players,” the IPL statement said.

“Rana was found to have breached article 2.3 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘use of an audible obscenity during a match’,” it added.

Nitish Rana’s reaction occurred during a crucial stage of the match, when tensions were high as Delhi Capitals fought to stay in the contest. While no disciplinary action has been reported against Tristan Stubbs despite his visible frustration, it was Rana who ultimately faced the penalty for his confrontation with the officials.

Why Did Nitish Rana Argue with the Umpires?

The controversy arose from a decision involving Tristan Stubbs, who requested to change his gloves mid-over due to the humid conditions affecting his grip. However, the umpires rejected the request, referring to playing conditions that do not permit equipment changes during an over. Following the decision, Stubbs found it difficult to regain momentum and was dismissed shortly after, visibly displeased.

Subsequently, Nitish Rana, along with Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani, approached the fourth umpire to question the ruling. Rana argued that similar changes had been allowed in the past, but the officials remained firm in their interpretation of the regulations.

What Do the Rules State?

According to IPL playing rules, batters must be prepared when the bowler is ready to deliver the ball, and any unnecessary delay may lead to penalties. Equipment changes are not allowed during an over if they interrupt the flow of the game, and such adjustments are only permitted during designated breaks to prevent time-wasting.

In this instance, the umpires made their decision based on this rule, giving priority to maintaining the continuity of play rather than accommodating the request.
