During their IPL 2024 game against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday, May 3, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell found humor in the latter’s unfortunate run-out.

Venkatesh stopped Russell’s attempt for a quick single, and a slightly off-target throw from Jasprit Bumrah was fielded well by Hardik Pandya, resulting in Russell’s dismissal.

In a post-match video, Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell, along with MI’s Suryakumar Yadav and KKR CEO Venky Mysore, were seen discussing the run-out incident.

Here’s the hilarious remark Venkatesh made about Russell:

“I open my eyes and I am seeing him over here! (laughs). Aise bhaagta nahi hai, pata nahi aaj kyu tez bhaag raha tha (Generally he doesn’t run, don’t know why he was sprinting today).”

Suryakumar jokingly teased that Venkatesh was saying Russell was slow at running. KKR won the game by 24 runs, and Venkatesh Iyer was named Player of the Match for scoring 70 runs off 52 balls.

KKR were struggling at 57/5 when Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey collaborated to rescue their team, adding a vital 83 runs to revive their chances. Although Kolkata got bowled out within their allotted 20 overs, Venkatesh’s score of 70 ensured they had a competitive target of 170 on the board.

Here’s what Venkatesh had to say in the post-match presentation about his innings and the playing conditions:

“When I started hitting the ball well, two more wickets fell and I thought I have to play the anchor role. Ball was holding and it was a two paced wicket. I try to be a smarter cricketer. Would’ve been easy for me to go after Piyush Chawla and the fast bowlers. Team needed me to be there till the end.”

Kolkata has accumulated 14 points and is close to securing a playoff spot. Their upcoming match is against the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Sunday, May 5th.
