The Board of Control for Cricket in India felicitated the U19 Women’s team for its historic success at the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. The young brigade defeated England in the final by seven wickets on Sunday, January 29 at the Potchefstroom to lift the trophy in the inaugural edition of the U19 World Cup. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar delivered a passionate speech congratulating the winners.

The felicitation ceremony took place during the third T20I between the Indian and New Zealand men’s cricket teams on Wednesday, February 1 in Ahmedabad. The BCCI shared a video from the ceremony, where Sachin Tendulkar delivered a speech for the Shafali Verma-led team. He said,

“I would like to congratulate you on the magnificent achievement. The entire nation will celebrate (the triumph) for years to come.”

“For me, my cricketing dreams started in 1983 but by winning this World Cup, you have given birth to many dreams. It was a magnificent performance,” he added.

“By winning this World Cup, you have given a dream to young girls in India to represent the country. The beginning of the WPL (Women’s Premier League) is going to be the biggest thing. I believe in equality for men and women, and not just in sports. There should be equal opportunities,” said Sachin Tendulkar.

World Cup winning U19 team gets INR 5 crore cash prize

The Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah earlier announced a 5 crore cash prize for the U19 team. During the felicitation ceremony, which was attended by Jay Shah, Sachin Tendulkar BCCI President Roger Binny, vice-president Rajeev Shukla, Treasurer Ashish Shelar, the cheque was handed over the the World Cup winners. The winners were felicitated amid huge roar and applause from the fans.
