Talented batter Shashank Singh hammered eight sixes and two boundaries in his rapid-fire unbeaten 68 as Punjab Kings defeated KKR by eight wickets.  The spotlight may have been on Jonny Bairstow, who made a timely comeback in the ongoing IPL 2024 season with a remarkable century, but Shashank Singh, in top form, also played a crucial part for Punjab Kings on Friday.

As the visitors left Kolkata Knight Riders bewildered at Eden Gardens, Shashank’s explosive unbeaten innings of 68 off only 28 deliveries, including eight sixes, proved pivotal in Punjab’s sensational victory, marking the highest successful chase in T20 history.

In reply to the massive target, PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Bairstow forged a formidable 93-run partnership during the powerplay. Prabhsimran blazed his way to a quickfire 54 off 20 balls, before Bairstow, the experienced England player, partnered with Rilee Rossouw for an 85-run stand.

However, Punjab still faced a significant challenge, needing 84 runs from the remaining 39 balls.

With Punjab maintaining the momentum in their impressive chase, Shashank stepped up next and unleashed a barrage of eight sixes and two boundaries in his rapid fifty, culminating in the winning shot off Ramandeep Singh as the visiting team sealed the match with eight wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.

Following the game, the official social media account of Punjab Kings shared a video of Shashank celebrating his knock and the significant victory by striking the iconic Shah Rukh Khan pose.

Accompanied by the music from the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, Shashank expressed his gratitude to Eden Gardens, saying, “Thank You Eden Gardens”. PBKS captioned the video: “Sssshhhh…. Shaaaaashaaaaa… Shashankkkkkk!”

‘Shashank Singh has emerged as the discovery of the tournament’

Following the eight-wicket victory, which propelled Punjab Kings to the eighth position in the points table and ended their four-match losing streak, interim captain Sam Curran commended Shashank.

“Pleased for Johnny. What an amazing knock. Shashank Singh has been the find of the tournament for us. Ashutosh as well. Proud of everyone,” he said in the post-match presentation.

The batsman, who debuted in the IPL in 2022, hammered 263 runs in the current season at an impressive strike rate of 182.64, including two half-centuries.
