India captain Shubman Gill endured a painful blow to both his finger and helmet from England skipper Ben Stokes’ delivery on Day 5 of the ongoing Manchester Test. The right-hander was visibly in discomfort, quickly removing his helmet and gloves after the ball struck him.
The incident took place during the 73rd over when a delivery from Stokes rose sharply off a length, hitting Gill on the finger before deflecting onto his helmet, even chipping a piece off it. The visiting skipper required medical attention on the field. Interestingly, Gill had already been nursing an injured hand after being struck by Jofra Archer on Day 4.

Earlier in the day, the England all-rounder came close to dismissing the right-hander leg-before, but the ball was drifting down the leg side. He also induced a risky drive through the covers when the Indian captain was on 81, but Ollie Pope couldn’t hold on to a tough chance.
Stokes Removes KL Rahul As Gill Approaches Century
England skipper Ben Stokes ended KL Rahul’s impressive knock at 90, trapping him leg-before in the 71st over and breaking a crucial 188-run stand with Indian captain Shubman Gill. The pair had come together after India suffered a dramatic collapse at 0/2, with Chris Woakes removing Yashasvi Jaiswal and B Sai Sudharsan for ducks.
Gill and Rahul, however, staged a strong recovery, guiding India to 174/2 by the close of Day 4 and halting England’s early momentum. The hosts had earlier piled up a massive 669 in their first innings—powered by centuries from Stokes (141) and Joe Root (150), as well as fifties from Zak Crawley (84) and Ben Duckett (94).
The score of 669 marked the highest Test total ever recorded at Manchester. At the latest update, India remained 108 runs behind, with Gill nearing a century and Washington Sundar at the crease.
