Australian pacer Spencer Johnson gave his team a great start in the Champions Trophy 2025 match against Afghanistan in Lahore on Friday, February 28. He took a wicket in the first over, bowling out Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a five-ball duck with a perfect yorker.

The ball swung in late, went between bat and pad, and hit the off-stump, similar to Mitchell Starc’s deliveries. This early wicket meant Afghanistan lost their first batter without scoring. Spencer Johnson was delighted and celebrated the moment with his teammates.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has struggled with the bat in the Champions Trophy. The wicketkeeper-batter managed only 10 and six runs against South Africa and England in his last two matches. These poor performances followed his impressive 110-run knock against New Zealand in a warm-up game.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to bat against Australia in a must-win Champions Trophy 2025 match. Still in the semifinal race, they defeated England by eight runs after Ibrahim Zadran’s 177 and Azmatullah Omarzai’s five-wicket haul. However, they lost their opener to South Africa by 107 runs.

Shahidi stated at the toss (via Cricbuzz):

“We were happy with the performance in our last game, we also have made plans against Australia and hopefully, we can rectify the mistakes we made against England. We are going with the same team.”

Steve Smith-led Australia began their campaign with a record Champions Trophy chase, defeating England by five wickets in an impressive run chase. Their match against South Africa was washed out due to rain, earning both teams a point each.

The Aussies are facing challenges without captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood (injured), and Mitchell Starc (unavailable), impacting their bowling attack.
