[WATCH]- Steve Smith’s Stunning Catch Removes Dhananjaya de Silva

Australia’s stand-in captain, Steve Smith, showcased his exceptional fielding skills once again by taking a brilliant one-handed catch on Day 3 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The veteran cricketer’s stunning grab ended a crucial partnership, dismissing Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva for 23 off 46 balls.

The breakthrough came in the 39th over when left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, bowling his 13th over, delivered a full ball outside off-stump. The delivery turned just enough to find the edge of De Silva’s bat. Smith reacted quickly to grab the low catch, but the umpires decided to review it.

Replays confirmed a clean take, helping Australia break a threatening 47-run stand and regain momentum.

It was Kuhnemann’s third wicket of the innings, following his earlier dismissals of Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne. Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon had already struck twice, removing Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 98/4 by lunch.

Notably, on Day 1 of the second Test, Steve Smith surpassed Ricky Ponting to become Australia’s all-time leading catcher in Test cricket. He now has 198 catches to his name in the format.

Steve Smith’s Second Ton of the Series Puts Australia 157 Runs Ahead

The 36-year-old notched his second century of the series, crafting a resilient 131 on a challenging pitch under intense heat, helping Australia build a strong 157-run lead. His crucial 259-run stand with Alex Carey, who led the scoring with 156, put the visitors in a commanding position.

However, despite starting Day 2 at 330/3, Australia collapsed, losing their final seven wickets for just 64 runs. Having already secured the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, Australia will now aim for their first Test series victory in Sri Lanka since 2011.
