Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav playfully teased teammate Arshdeep Singh for his “unbelievable intent” while batting during their T20 World Cup 2026 opener against the USA on Saturday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The right-handed batter joked that Arshdeep has certainly earned his spot at No. 8.

The 22-run partnership off just 14 balls between Suryakumar and Arshdeep gave India much-needed momentum on a challenging pitch. Arshdeep, who came in during the 17th over, got off the mark with a boundary over left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh’s head.

Though the 26-year-old scored only 4 runs, Suryakumar hit two boundaries and a six in the following overs to seize control of the innings. In a video shared on social media, the Indian skipper also thanked the left-arm seamer for praising his innings of 84 off 49 balls.

“Thank you, paaji. Partnership ekdam tagdi rahi, maza aa gaya. Aapse thoda sa motivation mila tujhe. Aapne hee contribute kiya. Intent aapka unbelievable tha. Jahan se aapne chaunka maara udhar se hee game change ho gaya. Aapne earn kar liya batting No.8 par.”

“Only I Know The Pressure I Felt”- Suryakumar Yadav

At the post-match presentation, the 35-year-old acknowledged that India will need to play much smarter in their upcoming matches following a lackluster batting display against the USA. He added:

“Only I can tell how much pressure I was feeling. but I had the belief. I knew if I bat till the end, I can make a difference. It was a little different wicket. But we knew when we woke up, there was not a lot of sun outside. Curator tried their best.”

“There was not enough sunlight to have the pitch rolled and watered. We cannot brush everything under the carpet, we need to bat much better. After winning also, you get to learn a lot of things.”
