Australia opener Travis Head added a touch of humour to the end of the Ashes 2025–26 after taking a playful dig at England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith. The comment came after both batters were dismissed playing rash shots in the fifth Test, which Australia won by five wickets to seal the series 4–1. Despite the high stakes of a series decider, Head’s remarks showed the lighter side of elite cricket once the dust had settled.
Rash Shots That Sparked The Joke
Jamie Smith’s dismissal in England’s first innings drew attention for the wrong reasons. Attempting to take on a shoulder-high short ball, Smith miscued his shot and was caught in front of square, ending his knock on 46. It was a moment that summed up England’s struggles in key phases of the match.
Ironically, Head found himself in a similar situation during Australia’s chase of 160 in the final innings. The left-hander charged down the pitch to a short delivery, trying to muscle it past mid-wicket. Instead, he managed only a top-edge and was caught, departing for a 35-ball 29. While Australia still went on to complete the chase comfortably, Head’s dismissal became part of the post-match banter.
“We Can Compare Whose Was Worse”
Speaking after the Test on ABC Sport, Head did not shy away from poking fun at himself while referencing Smith’s earlier error. Reflecting on those moments, he said:
“I wonder what it would be like to be in their dressing room sometimes and play a pretty rank shot. Me and Smithy, Jamie Smith, I’ll have a beer with Jamie Smith later and we can compare whose was worse,” he said.
That shot that got Travis Head out in the run chase wasn't a great one… Travis said he was doing a good Jamie Smith impression. 😅

The remark quickly gained attention for its honesty and humour, highlighting the mutual respect between players even in the fiercest rivalries. With this win, Australia not only claimed the Test but also retained the Ashes urn, having previously won 4–0 in 2021/22 and drawn 2–2 in England in 2023.
Travis Head’s Series To Remember
While the joke made headlines, Travis Head’s performances with the bat defined the Ashes 2025–26. He finished as the leading run-scorer of the series, amassing 629 runs from five Tests at an impressive average of 62.90. The left-hander struck three centuries, the most by any batter in the series, underlining his dominance in Australian conditions.
His standout effort came in the third Test at Adelaide, where he hammered a superb 170 off 219 balls. Head also saved one of his best for the finale in Sydney, blasting 163 from 166 deliveries in the first innings, an innings studded with 24 boundaries and a six. That commanding display earned him the Player of the Match award and capped off a series in which his bat played a central role in Australia’s emphatic triumph.
