Uganda players joyfully danced on the field after securing qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup, marking the nation’s first-ever participation in a World Cup event. The ICC tournament is scheduled to take place between June 4 and 30 next year in the West Indies and the USA.
The World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023, starting on November 22 and concluding today (November 30), featured seven nations: Namibia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Nigeria. These teams competed in a round-robin league to secure two World Cup berths.
Namibia secured the top spot by winning all six matches, and Uganda claimed the second position with five wins. Consequently, both teams earned qualification for the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup.
Earlier today, Uganda defeated Rwanda convincingly by nine wickets, surpassing Zimbabwe to secure the second position in the points table. The players celebrated this historic moment by dancing on the field.
The Uganda Cricket Association shared a video of the celebration on X with the caption:
“Celebrations just got started! T20 World Cup-bound Uganda once again took the famous nursery school rhyme to the global audience. Ekibobo kili mu nyumba led by coach @OgwangOyuku – Indeed the boys got the big basket in the house. #CricketCranesInColour #Twaake@PlasconUganda.”
