India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy made an instant impact in the first T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand, removing Tim Robinson with just his third delivery of the spell. The game is being held on Wednesday, January 21, at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.

The wicket fell on the third ball of New Zealand’s seventh over. Chakravarthy, bowling a 95 kmph leg-break, saw Robinson charge down the pitch and attempt a cross-bat slog. However, he mistimed it, giving an easy catch to Shivam Dube at mid-wicket.

The opener managed 21 runs from 15 deliveries, hitting two crisp fours and a towering six. Robinson’s wicket left New Zealand reeling at 52/3 after 6.3 overs.

Chasing a formidable target of 239, New Zealand got off to a shaky start as Devon Conway was quickly dismissed for a two-ball duck in the first over by Arshdeep Singh. Hardik Pandya then struck in the very next over, sending back Rachin Ravindra for just one run off five deliveries.

Tim Robinson and Glenn Phillips tried to stabilize the innings, putting on 51 runs from 30 balls for the third wicket, before Robinson fell for 21 off 15. At the halfway mark, New Zealand were 87/3, still needing 152 runs to win, with Phillips unbeaten on 48 and Mark Chapman on 15.

Earlier, Abhishek Sharma starred for India with a blistering 84 off 35 balls, featuring five fours and eight sixes. Captain Suryakumar Yadav (32 off 22) and Hardik Pandya (25 off 16) provided crucial support in the middle overs. In the final overs, Rinku Singh shone with a quickfire 44 not out off 20 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, helping India finish their 20 overs at 238/7.
