In a touching moment after India’s Champions Trophy victory, Virat Kohli showed his respect by touching Mohammed Shami’s mother’s feet. On Sunday, March 9, India secured the title by defeating Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand by four wickets in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a target of 252 on a challenging pitch, India reached the target with six balls to spare. Although Kohli was dismissed for just one run, key contributions from Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul guided the team to victory.
During the post-match celebrations, Kohli met Shami’s family and sought blessings from his mother. He also posed for a picture, capturing the heartfelt moment. With a bright smile, Kohli embraced the joyous atmosphere as the Dubai crowd applauded the champions.

Following the match, Virat Kohli stated that India was determined to bounce back strongly after their 1-3 Test series defeat in Australia. The 36-year-old, competing in his ninth ICC final, shared his joy over the team’s youthful energy and enthusiasm throughout the tournament.
“It’s been amazing, we wanted to bounce back after a tough Australia tour. Lovely playing with a bunch of amazing youngsters. They’re stepping up and taking India in the right direction. After playing for so long, you look forward to playing under pressure. To win titles, the whole team has to step up in different games,” Kohli said.
Kohli Praises New Zealand as one of the best fielding sides
Kohli also lauded New Zealand for their exceptional fielding, acknowledging them as one of the best in the game. He added:
“We’ve always admired how New Zealand maximizes its talent despite a limited player pool. They come in with a clear strategy, and every fielder knows exactly where the bowler will deliver,” he remarked.
He further praised their unwavering confidence and skill, calling them the best fielding side. “A huge shoutout to them. It’s tough to see a close friend like Kane Williamson on the losing side, but there’s only love and respect between us,” Kohli added.
Individually, Kohli had an impressive tournament, amassing 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50. His standout performance came against Pakistan, where he remained unbeaten on 100.
