The 52nd league match of the ongoing BBL season between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades featured a spectacular piece of fielding when Renegades’ Will Sutherland clung to one of the tournament’s best catches to dismiss Nick Hobson.
Renegades captain Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat first against the reigning champions. Stephen Eskinazi’s stunning half-century got the Scorchers off to a flying start. They were on track to post a mammoth total before Renegades struck with a flurry of wickets in the middle overs, with Nick Hobson’s dismissal being the highlight of the innings.
During Tom Roger’s 17th over, Hobson attempted to loft the ball over the inner ring in an attempt to up the ante. However, with Will Sutherland chasing him, he could only slice the ball. For a brief moment, it appeared that the pacer had misjudged the trajectory of the ball and had caught himself off guard, but he turned his body mid-air to snare a one-handed stunner. His skipper, Aaron Finch, who was closest to him on the field, couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed and surrounded his pacer in joy.

The defending champions were unfazed by the wicket, as Cameron Bancroft continued his assault from one end, slamming an unbeaten 95 off 50 deliveries. His innings, combined with Cooper Connolly’s late blitz, led the three-time champions to a colossal total of 212 runs.
Right-arm pacer David Moody was taken off the attack in the first over of the match after dishing out two waist-high no-balls, one of which hit Bancroft on the ribs. Sutherland, who made that stunning catch, was run out for 46 runs in his four-over quota.
