RCB wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik playfully teased former England captain Nasser Hussain during a chat. Karthik joked about how Hussain had fervently wished for his exclusion from the 2022 T20 squad.

Despite this banter, Karthik, aged 38, earned a spot in the Indian squad for the preceding T20 World Cup in Australia after a stellar IPL 2022 season. However, Karthik failed to live up to expectations, managing just 14 runs at an average of less than five across four matches.

During a SkySports podcast with Nasser Hussain, Karthik playfully replied to a compliment from the ex-England captain, saying:

“Last year at the World Cup the only person who wanted me so badly out of the team… You took an interview with me you stabbed me in the back. Where is the Rishabh Pant that was the headline we got. Nas I am not going to trust a word of what you said. Nas doesn’t like me as a person as a player as a wicketkeeper let alone any part of me. This was the first time he said ‘oh you smashed it’.”

“But still, if you ask him if he puts the Indian team right now and ask six keepers I would be the eighth on the list. Don’t try to play nice and coy with me. After 10 games he would probably give me a ring and say I just thought for a second you batted well now looks good. On a serious note, it has been a good start for me personally,” added Karthik.

Team India is still looking for their main wicketkeeper for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June, and the ongoing IPL could be the deciding factor for all the contenders for the position.

Dinesh Karthik has been in outstanding form during IPL 2024

In the midst of RCB’s lacklustre performance in IPL 2024, Dinesh Karthik has emerged as one of the team’s standout performers. Despite RCB currently being second to last on the points table with just one win and four losses, Karthik has showcased his prowess as a finisher once again.

Following a disappointing IPL season last year, the experienced wicketkeeper has regained his form, tallying 90 runs at an impressive average of 45 and a strike rate exceeding 173 in five matches.

Karthik shone brightly in RCB’s sole victory of the season against PBKS, contributing a quickfire 28 runs off just 10 balls to secure a thrilling run chase in the final over. Before the season, the cricketer from Tamil Nadu had indicated that this IPL season might be his final one.

Dinesh Karthik will return to the field when RCB faces MI in their upcoming match on Thursday, April 11.
