“We Completely Agree With ICC”- BCCI Backs World Body After Pakistan Boycotts India Match

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has expressed complete agreement with the International Cricket Council’s position on sportsmanship after Pakistan chose to boycott its group-stage match against India at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The high-profile fixture was scheduled to be played on February 15. Speaking on the matter, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the Indian board would avoid making any further public comments until it engages in formal discussions with the ICC.

“ICC has issued a big statement, they have spoken about sportsmanship. We completely agree with the ICC. BCCI won’t make any comments on it until we speak with the ICC,” Shukla said, clearly indicating that the Indian board is aligned with the global governing body’s stance and prefers to address the issue through official channels rather than public debate.

Pakistan Government’s Announcement Sparks Controversy

Shukla’s statement came a day after the Pakistan government announced that although it had approved the national team’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, it would not permit the side to play against India. In a post shared on X, the government stated that the team “shall not take the field” for the February 15 match. No specific reasons were offered for this decision.

Despite the boycott of the India match, Pakistan will continue to participate in the remainder of the tournament, which begins on February 7. The announcement immediately drew attention across the cricketing world, given the significance of India–Pakistan matches in global tournaments and the expectations surrounding participation once teams qualify under an agreed schedule.

Warns Against Selective Participation

The ICC responded strongly to the development, stating that “selective participation” is contrary to the basic principles of a global sporting competition. In its official release, the world body said it had taken note of the Pakistan government’s statement and was awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board. However, it reiterated that all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms and adhere to the published schedule.

The ICC emphasised that its tournaments are founded on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and cautioned that selective participation threatens the spirit and sanctity of such events. While acknowledging that governments have a role in national decision-making, the ICC said the move was not in the interest of the global game or fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan. It urged the PCB to work towards a mutually acceptable solution that safeguards all stakeholders.

Meanwhile, India enter the tournament in confident form after securing a 4-1 victory in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The defending champions are placed in Group A along with Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands and the USA, and will begin their campaign on February 7.
