Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya claimed his team did not play good quality cricket on Friday following their disappointing 18-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai Indians (MI) fans at the Wankhede witnessed yet another disappointing performance from their team as the five-time champions fell to their tenth defeat of the season, their joint-highest in an IPL campaign. MI had hopes of winning a heartfelt consolation game in front of their home crowd on May 17 (Friday).

Pursuing 215 runs, MI seemed like they would win at 89/1 in the tenth over. However, a dismal finish that effectively summed up their season saw them lose by eighteen runs.

MI finished at the bottom of the table for the second time in three years. MI had never placed last in the table before 2024 when they finished last in 2022.

Hardik Pandya comments on the terrible season:

Hardik Pandya, captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), took stock of his team’s disastrous IPL 2024 campaign and acknowledged that they did not play good cricket. He said that MI lost the event because their team did not perform up to their expectations.

It was a challenging season for the team, Hardik said to the commentators following MI’s defeat at the hands of LSG. Hardik continued by saying that the team’s performance was a reflection of their poor cricketing. He believed that the five-time champions’ season as a whole went wrong.

“Quite difficult. This season we didn’t play good quality cricket, and it cost us the whole season. It’s a professional world, sometimes there’ll be good and sometimes bad days. As a group, we didn’t play quality and smart cricket, and it showed in the results. It was too early to exactly point out what went wrong tonight. The whole season kind of went wrong. We can pass on this game and look forward to the next season,” Hardik said.

The situation worsened with Hardik’s dry run with the bat; he ended the season with 218 runs in 14 matches at an average of 18 and a strike rate of 145. With the ball, too, he wasn’t as good. He picked up 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.75.
