Uganda captain Brian Masaba was at a loss for words after the team’s first World Cup victory. Uganda overcame Papua New Guinea by three wickets on Wednesday, June 5, to open their account for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Uganda’s cricket history will be forever changed on June 6, when they defeated Papua New Guinea at Providence Stadium in Guyana to record their first-ever T20 World Cup victory.

After choosing to bowl first, Uganda easily defeated PNG for a mere 77 runs, taking three wickets en route. Following the victory, their captain, Brian Masaba, expressed his happiness and praised his teammates for their outstanding performance. Afghanistan crushed Uganda by 125 runs in their dismal mega-event debut. Even though they were only shot for 58 runs, they overcame PNG with a spectacular comeback.

“I watched Frank Nsubuga play growing up”- Brian Masaba

The skipper of Uganda was in the middle as they crossed the boundary and history was made. The T20 World Cup’s oldest player, Frank Nsubuga, however, set the stage with a brilliant stint that included two maidens in a four-over period while only allowing four runs and taking two wickets.

In the big event’s history, he cast the most economical magic. Masaba was full of admiration for Nsubuga, praising him for his many years of contributions to Ugandan cricket.

“What can I say about Frank Nsubuga that hasn’t been said already? I mean, he’s a special guy, I watched Frank play growing up, so to see him do what he does on the biggest stage makes me very emotional. To be there to witness it, I don’t quite have the words. He deserves it,” Brian Masaba said after the match.
“We know how good he is, how good he’s been over the years, and the amount of work he has taken to stay that consistent. It’s incredible. So, for him to come out, I’m not surprised that he did what he did, but doing it at this stage, that’s very, very special,” Brian Masaba added.
Uganda will meet two-time champions and co-hosts the West Indies at Providence Stadium on June 8.
