Veteran India speedster Ishant Sharma believes that Rishabh Pant is unlikely to make a swift recovery and might not participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals. Rishabh Pant had undergone surgery following a severe car accident last year, resulting in multiple injuries.
According to the recent medical update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pant has started practising batting and keeping in the nets while following the prescribed fitness routine. During a discussion on Jio Cinema, Ishant Sharma was asked about Pant’s chances of returning to competitive cricket.
He expressed his doubts, stating that Pant’s injuries were significant, making it difficult for him to resume running and turning on the field as both a wicketkeeper and batter. While Ishant Sharma seemingly ruled out Pant’s inclusion in India’s World Cup squad, he expressed optimism about Pant’s potential return to the IPL for the Delhi Capitals in the following year.
Ishant pointed out that it was fortunate that Pant didn’t require a second surgery, as that would have prolonged his absence even further. However, he remained doubtful about his fitness for the upcoming World Cup but hoped for his successful recovery to play in the IPL.
“I don’t see him playing this World Cup” -Wasim Jaffer’s thoughts on Rishabh Pant
Pant’s absence was a major setback for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023, and they struggled, finishing in the ninth position. Cricket personalities like Wasim Jaffer and Aakash Chopra also expressed their opinions on Pant’s fitness.
Both believed that it would take time for him to regain full fitness and thus didn’t see him participating in the World Cup this year. However, they acknowledged Pant’s exceptional abilities as a wicketkeeper-batter and wished him a speedy recovery.
Rishabh Pant has already achieved remarkable success as a wicketkeeper-batter, with notable performances in Test matches outside India. While his ODI career has been decent, his test statistics stand out with 2271 runs at an impressive average of 43.67 in 33 matches.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding his return to competitive cricket, the cricket community eagerly awaits the talented player’s comeback.
