Ahead of India’s much-awaited Test series in England, head coach Gautam Gambhir conveyed a direct message to the curator at Beckenham County Ground. As reported, Josh Marden, the head curator, shared that the Indian team’s request was simple and focused, “We want a good pitch.”
This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket, as the team prepares for the five-Test series starting June 20 at Headingley, without senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. To get ready, India has set up a training camp in Beckenham, South East London.
During the internal discussions, Gambhir and his staff approached Marden and explained the type of surface they needed—something that strikes a balance, neither too easy for batters nor overly helpful for bowlers.
Pitch Adjustments to Suit Test Conditions
Josh Marden shared insights about the discussions with the Indian coaching team. “Yes, the coaching staff, including Gautam Gambhir and others, spoke to us after their internal meeting. Their message was clear, ‘We want a good pitch.’ Not something too flat or too green, but something that will genuinely help with match preparation. They wanted more realistic conditions, not just batting drills.”
As a response, the grounds staff made adjustments such as managing grass coverage, extending the width and length of nets, and fine-tuning the surface. These tweaks were designed to provide a more authentic Test-match experience. Marden added that the team was satisfied with the changes, and the feedback had been encouraging.
Balancing the Surface for Seamers
The surface at Beckenham is traditionally known for being batting-friendly, particularly in white-ball matches. However, for this red-ball preparation phase, specific modifications were introduced to aid bowlers as well. Marden elaborated on the efforts to balance the pitch’s nature. “Yes, and no. The soil here naturally plays batter-friendly, so visually, the wicket may look dry or flat.”
He continued, “But we manage grass density, not just what you see, but how thick it is. The pitches currently used by India and Australia have slightly more grass than our usual white-ball surfaces. It’s a subtle balance. Even with a brown surface, there’s enough life in it for seamers, if you hit the right length.” These adjustments aim to replicate actual Test match conditions more closely.
India Squad for the England Test Series
The Indian squad includes Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav.
